JOB DESCRIPTION - SITE MEDICS AND SITE NURSES

Sirius is a Canadian company that specializes in Wilderness Safety training and medical support services for remote areas including regions of the North. Over the past 22 years, Sirius has become the largest provider of wilderness first aid and wilderness safety training in Canada. We are dedicated to delivering medical support and training for organizations and people who live and work in remote environments.

Sirius has exciting opportunities for qualified EMT’s, paramedics and registered nurses to work with a dedicated team in Canada’s remote and arctic regions. Opportunities exist for full- or part-time work at various locations in Canada's wilderness (Nunavut, Nunavik-Québec, northern Ontario, Labrador, etc.).



Positions : Site Nurses and Site Paramedics/EMTs

Schedules : 3 to 4 week long rotations (opportunities exists for single rotations or multiple rotations 4-on/4-off), depending on your availability and projects.

Work Locations : Camps in the Arctic and in remote regions of Canada.

Project Dates : Depends on projects and needs.


Qualifications Required

The level of training and certification required depends on the size and location of the projects. Current opportunities exist for:

  • Registered nurses and nurse practitioners
  • Paramedics & Emergency Medical Technicians (PCP, ACP, CCP, EMT, W-EMT, etc.)


Position Summary

The Site Medic/Nurse is responsible for providing emergency medical assessment and care for site staff in a pre-hospital setting, and for managing health-related issues on site. The Site Medic/Nurse works in cooperation with the site supervisor and exterior medical professionals and coordinates emergency medical evacuations as needed. The position requires the exercise of independent judgment and decision-making.


Prerequisites

  • Prehospital emergency care and trauma experience
  • Strong assessment skills
  • Experience working in remote camps / work sites in northern communities an asset
  • Experience with air evacuation an asset
  • Excellent command of English mandatory, French & English also required on some projects
  • Proficiency in use of computers and applications such as MS Word and Excel

Additional Skills and training could include:

  • CPR instructor, first aid, wilderness first aid, etc.

Working Conditions

The Site Medic/Nurse must be willing to work long hours and be on call 24 hours a day. The project requires that all staff work as a team to ensure that schedules are met and a good work environment is maintained. Every team member may be asked to perform duties not specifically identified in their position description. All staff members are expected to work to the highest safety standards. Work schedules and transportation are subject to delay and change due to weather conditions. Telephone, Internet and computer access available at all sites. Each new employee is trained by our team prior to departure and upon arrival on site. Medical, administrative and technical assistance is available for employees 24 hours per day to handle emergencies.


Remuneration

  • Competitive salary, to be discussed based on project and experience
  • Employees are paid for 12 hours per day, 7 days per week for the entire duration of their rotation
  • Travel days and standby days are also remunerated
  • Payments are done bi-weekly by direct deposit
  • Three or four week rotation schedules are available
  • Possibility for contract renewal
  • Transportation, meals and lodging provided for the duration of the project
  • All medical equipment and supplies are provided

Job Responsibilities and Duties

The Site Medic/Nurse reports to the site superintendent and Sirius management team. In an emergency situation, the Site Medic/Nurse takes directives from a competent local medical authority as needed, or proceeds according to standard emergency medical practices. The Site Medic/Nurse should be able to:

  • Respond to all medical problems and emergencies
  • Carry out physician orders in respect to patient care if required
  • Assist in arranging emergency medical evacuations, as needed
  • Coordinate with local health officials in the event of a medical evacuation
  • Maintain records of accidents, illness and injuries including recommendation for measures to avoid illness and injuries
  • Ensure privacy for patients and confidentiality of personal information
  • Participate in camp health and safety committee and project management team
  • Assist the health and safety officer or Site Operations Manager in maintaining the health and safety plan and in keeping workers in good health
  • Assist in the maintenance of emergency plans
  • Supervise the inventory, ordering, receiving and stocking of medical equipment and supplies of the first aid station
  • Submit patient care reports to the company
  • Complete forms, documentation and reports as required by the WCB/WSCC
  • Maintain a daily log of activities and patient care
  • Complete the camp opening, infirmary setup and camp closing activities as applicable
